Without spoiling, even if it's a little hard.
The movie is good, it's entertaining, thrilling, exciting, amusing and quite interesting, yet I'm going to join the pack and say "It could have been better". Don't get me wrong, the movie is quite good, but there is a bunch of things going on and they couldn't quite explain the whole thing, there are a lot of things that are left without explanation and/or depth, yet the movie is enjoyable and yes, I will see it again.
Now, the movie doesn't cover some of the things I thought it would, but that's good. Once again we are reminded (Because sometimes I forget) that this is a whole different universe, sure thing, there are a lot of shout offs to our beloved (sometimes) 616 universe but at the same time this universe holds it's own and works pretty well.
Tony/Rhodey is really well explored, so I'm quite happy about it. Don Cheadle delivers a great role. Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) could have been better, but overall delivered a good acting.
Not knowing how to further discuss the whole deal without spoiling anything I'll leave you people with just one recommendation.
STAY for the damned postcredit scene. It's fucking worth it.

As an aside, do you think that the film's suffering from 'Dark Knight Syndrome,' that is, are the problems because they tried to pack too much into a single film, or are they trying to handle material that just doesn't seem to work with their audience and genre?

I think the problem is they tried to pack too much into a single film; they introduced new characters than the non-comic fan audiences are not familiar with, they introduced different subplots and various other things, but they don't have the time to explain it all, so sometimes it seems just a bit confusing and others just too simple.
