Wow, I used to be crazy obsessed with this series! In my opinion he doesn't really try because he figures it's a wasted effort (he'll just smell bad/be gross anyway). I imagine as he gets older he'll start trying more and maybe that particular aspect of his mutation will calm somewhat, like adolescence in general.
